Woof justice: Dog owners banned from 'drink-walking' pets

Dog owners in Russia have been banned from ‘drink-walking’, with pets bigger than 15.8kg (35lbs) – including rottweilers, German shepherds and dobermans – ruled too dangerous to take out while drunk.

In a move aimed at cracking down on fouling and making green spaces ‘more enjoyable’, Tameside council in Greater Manchester introduced £1,000 fines for dog owners using long leads.

Anyone using a leash longer than two metres (6ft 5in) risks the penalty because owners are said to be more likely to clean up mess if they have short leads.

Critics, of course, were quick to label the move ‘barking mad’.

‘This is just the latest in a steady stream of potty policies that try to criminalise and fine innocent dog walkers,’ said Dylan Sharpe from Big Brother Watch.

The Kennel Club, meanwhile, described the policy as ‘completely arbitrary and unnecessary’.
