The incredible new ground is set to be built by architects Marazzi
Architetti for Siena, who are currently on-course for promotion to Serie A this
season.
The 21,000-seater venue will be sunk into the ground so as
not to disturb the stunning scenery of Tuscany.
Marazzi explains that the idea behind the award-winning plan is to make the stadium "just
like a Greek amphitheatre", with one side of the stadium to be a grassy
slope rather than traditional plastic seating, with those on the other side of
the stadium enjoying a wonderful view of the ancient hilltop city itself.
The various restaurants and souvenir shops of the modern
stadium will be hidden inside what the architects refer to as an "inhabited
roof", which sits alongside one side of the stadium. It is the only part
of the stadium visible above ground level, but it will still blend in with the
surroundings since the concrete structure is to be clad in local stone to make
sure that it does not look out of place.
There's just one hitch: the Comune di Siena is currently trying to secure private funding to help build the eye-catching (or should that be eye-deceiving?) new ground. Let's hope Siena win that promotion, which should help oil the wheels of construction for what would be a truly unique venue.
