BA lost cat at Athens Airprt

Amplify’d from www.bbc.co.uk

A couple has criticised British Airways' handling of pets after their cat was lost for several hours at Athens airport.

Kit and Megan Peel had been living in Greece when they decided to return home to Nidderdale in North Yorkshire with their cats Spartacus and Tancredi.

The couple claim BA's handling area was unsuitable after Spartacus broke free and bolted through a window.

BA said it had received accolades for its handling of animals.

The couple rescued Spartacus and his brother while living in Greece

Mr Peel was travelling to Heathrow Airport and had arranged for the cats to travel on BA Cargo, paying more than 700 euros for pet tickets.

Mr Peel said he was in a room with open kiosk-style windows holding the cats while their cage was x-rayed when Spartacus became scared and broke free, running off into a busy cargo area.

Llanwrtyd Wells bog snorkel has new world record time

Bog snorkelling
Bog snorkellers must swim two lengths of the water-filled trench without using conventional strokes

The World Bog Snorkelling Championships in Powys has been won in a record time.

About 140 people from the UK, Poland, Ireland, Germany, France and Australia challenged for the title at Llanwrtyd Wells, Powys, on Sunday.

Contestants must avoid conventional swimming strokes when negotiating the 60 yard (55m) water-filled trenches.

Dan Morgan, from Brecon, is said to have "thrashed" the existing record, 1 min 38.15 secs, by eight seconds.

His time was 1 min 30.06 secs.

The Jewel Wasp

Amplify’d from burkemuseum.blogspot.com

And you thought "living" roaches were bad

Two new states for roaches have been discovered recently: the undead and the robotic.
The undead "zombie" roaches are the victims of the jewel wasp, whose brain-injected toxin stops a roach's will to escape. Creepy as that is, scientists are now using this parasitic relationship to better understand the chemical nature of movement.
As for the 'droids, European scientists have newly invented a robotic cockroach. The machine, covered in a paper filter drenched in cockroach pheremones, is capable of influencing roach group-behavior. Researchers speculate that these robots could be used to lead cockroaches to traps, eliminating the need for pesticides.

Digital Overload: Your Brain On Gadgets

The average person today consumes almost three times as much information as what the typical person consumed in 1960, according to research at the University of California, San Diego.

And The New York Times reports that the average computer user checks 40 websites a day and can switch programs 36 times an hour.

"It's an onslaught of information coming in today," says Times technology journalist Matt Richtel. "At one time a screen meant maybe something in your living room. But now it's something in your pocket so it goes everywhere — it can be behind the wheel, it can be at the dinner table, it can be in the bathroom. We see it everywhere today."

Richtel has spent the past several months researching the toll technology and "information juggling" are taking on our lives — and our brains. His series "Your Brain On Computers" describes how multitasking on computers and digital gadgets affects the way people process information — and how quickly they can then become distracted.

Origin of the word BACON

Amplify’d from www.todayifoundout.com

The word derives originally from the Old High German “bacho”, meaning “buttock”, which in turn derived from the Proto-Germanic “backoz”, meaning “back”.  By the 14th century, it found its way into Old French as “bacun”, meaning “back meat”.  And by the 16th century, it found its way into Middle English as “bacoun”, which referred to all cured pork, not just the back meat.

Bacon
  • The USDA defines “bacon” as “the cured belly of a swine carcass”… mmm swine carcass…
  • The phrase “bring home the bacon” has been around since the early 20th century and was initially used primarily by the working class, with bacon being a staple meat for that class.
  • The difference between bacon and salted pork or ham is primarily in the brine used.  Brine for bacon often includes sodium nitrite, sodium nitrate, and saltpeter for curing the meat; sodium ascorbate for setting the color, as well as speeding up the curing process; and brown or maple sugar for flavor, among other ingredients.  One of the principle differences is that brine for ham tends to have a much higher concentration of sugar.

2. Knives off the table

Butcher Joshua Applestone speaks to a rapt audience as he butchers a half hog at New York's James Beard House on June 16, 2010.

3. Match the blade to the butchery

Butcher Joshua Applestone demonstrates proper knife technique. Applestone's outfit, Fleisher's Meats, teaches the skills of slicing swine to aspiring butchers.

4. Don't get slick

Having forgotten his own bone saw at home in Kingston, NY, butcher Joshua Applestone attempted to make do with a borrowed hack saw. In the end, he ditched the hack saw and demonstrated most of the operation using a Wusthof 12-inch chef's knife.Read more at www.popularmechanics.com

Monkey adopts Cat

Amplify’d from groups.yahoo.com

During
the remarkable moments the monkey would become agitated if Anne
ventured too near to take pictures and at one point used a huge leaf to
try and cover the kitten from view

The monkey was even wary of other macaques and would not allow other young males to get too close

Throughout the session the kitten enjoyed the attention being lavished on it by its protective carer and made no effort to leave

The
reserve is inhabited by about 340 monkeys in four groups. It is
considered sacred by locals and visited by about 10,000 tourists each
month

It is not known how the cat came to be in the company of the macaques

£1-a-day heart wonder drug: Pill could save 10,000 lives every year in UK

A pill costing little more than £1 a day could save the lives of thousands suffering from a common heart condition.

British doctors are so impressed with the ‘breakthrough findings’ of a major study that they have pledged to start using the drug, ivabradine, to treat patients with heart failure straight away, even though it has not yet been licensed for the condition in the UK.

More than 700,000 people live with heart failure, which occurs when the organ becomes too weak to pump blood efficiently round the body.

This can lead to fatigue, breathlessness, increased heart rate and other serious complications.

Model acts out a heart attack

Around 100,000 a year are thought to die from heart failure and many patients are repeatedly admitted to hospital because of their symptoms.
