Anne Frank's 'tree of hope' blown down

For two years it gave hope to Anne Frank, a rare glimpse of the world outside

But the 150-year-old tree the wartime Dutch girl drew comfort from while in hiding bowed to the ravages of age and disease as it was toppled by fierce winds yesterday. The giant fungus-riddled chestnut snapped off 3ft from the ground but missed the Anne Frank House museum.

The Amsterdam schoolgirl made several poignant references to it in her diaries. One read: "I look up at the blue sky and the bare chestnut tree, on whose branches little raindrops shine, appearing like silver." In another she wrote: "As long as this exists...
