Six Arrested in Alleged Plot to Kill Pope

Half a dozen suspected Islamic extremists working as street cleaners in London have been arrested on suspicion of hatching an alleged plot to assassinate Pope Benedict XVI during his trip to Britain. The suspects range in age from 26 to 50, and at least some are of Algerian origin. Five were arrested in an early morning raid at a trash depot less than a mile from Hyde Park, where the pope is to hold a prayer vigil Saturday evening and where the trash cleaners would have been able to move relatively freely throughout the crowd. A sixth suspect was arrested Friday afternoon at a house in north London, and more homes were being searched.
