The Glasgow club, Manchester United and police are hoping for no repeats of the violence which marred the 2008 Uefa Cup final in the city.

Major police operation as Rangers fans travel to Manchester

On Tuesday, an estimated 3,500 supporters will make the journey in a convoy of buses. They will travel to the DW stadium in Wigan, where they will all gather before travelling to the Old Trafford Stadium in Manchester. Officials from Rangers will hand out tickets for the game to members of Rangers official travel club during this last stage of the journey. Following the match, the Rangers fans will be bussed out of Manchester and back home to Scotland.

By keeping the Rangers supporters out of the city before and after the game, both clubs are confident there will be no violence. Fans who do not have a ticket have been urged not to travel at all, while a statement on the official website of Rangers FC a few weeks ago said there would be no exceptions to the arrangement agreed by the clubs and police.
