Trapped Miners Must Move 3,000 Tons Of Rock

The 33 miners trapped 2,000ft underground in Chile will have to move more than 3,000 tons of rock to ensure their rescue is successful, experts have said. Skip related content

While the trapped men are in high spirits after being sent food and clothing, they still face continuous work to remove rock that will fall as the rescue tunnel is bored.

The digging operation - codenamed Operation San Lorenzo after the martyred Christian saint - has begun, but will take between three and four months to complete.

Experts have voiced concerns about the hard work the men will have to undertake to help rescuers, particularly if they are already in a fragile mental state.
